FRANKLIN GOTHIC
comeback of the century
Assignment for CalArts' "Introduction to Typography" course, week 4. Students have to design an expressive type-only poster about a given typeface, which was researched previously.
If Franklin Gothic were a person, it’d be a strong, resilient leader who doesn’t lose its human side (and also someone who speaks little, but when they do, it’s loud). It feels from wartime, despite being created before the First World War began; the contrast between the modern serif-inspired characteristics and the typeface itself being sans-serif screams to me “we’ve gotta be strong, but relatable.”
In my poster, I attempted using type not only as type, but as a figure; an element. The main title is an homage to Armin Hoffman’s “Tell” poster, as well as the typical “heroes-assemble” pose so common in superhero films. Thus, “Franklin” is the commander of an army: the actual text explaining the typeface.

Trabajo para la semana 4 del curso "Introducción a la Tipografía" de CalArts. Los estudiantes deben diseñar un póster tipográfico expresivo sobre una tipografía determinada, previamente investigada.
Si Franklin Gothic fuera una persona, sería un líder fuerte y resistente que no pierde su lado humano (y también alguien que habla poco, pero cuando lo hace, es fuerte). Se siente como del tiempo de guerra, a pesar de haber sido creada antes de que comenzara la Primera Guerra Mundial; el contraste entre las características modernas inspiradas en las fuentes serif y el tipo de letra en sí mismo siendo sans-serif me grita "tenemos que ser fuertes, pero relacionables".
En mi póster, intenté usar la tipografía no sólo como una fuente, sino también como una figura; un elemento. El título principal es un homenaje al póster "Tell" de Armin Hoffman, así como a la típica pose de héroes reunidos tan común en las películas de superhéroes. Así, “Franklin” es el comandante de un ejército: el texto real que explica la tipografía.
